Boring training

One complaint often levelled on training is that sessions can be boring. As an athlete, it’s essential that you understand the process required to achieve your goals and how your coach is helping you to build towards them.

Without it, training has little meaning to you. Your mind wanders, you don’t connect with the process and you’re not ‘present’ during your sessions, you clock out. You’re bored.

But it doesn’t have to be this way – and all it takes is a little switch in your approach. I’ll give you an example.

During my Rugby Sevens days, we predominantly used two run sessions: pitch diagonals and reverse pyramid shuttles. We ran these constantly, in every session, over and over again.

We understood why. They were super measurable and repeatable, and we all knew that if we completed them consistently our on field performance would improve. Simple.

On paper, it seemed pretty basic and even boring but to us they meant the world.

So if you find yourself thinking your training is boring, ask yourself this: Do I really understand the path my coach is taking with my training to achieve my goals?
