Watching running & bike races with my dad as a kid, one thing I always remember him saying when he saw an athlete tire was “he’s going to blow up.”
The meaning of course in simple terms is the guy was out of energy and someone who may have been leading the race was now totally out of the picture.
From time to time in our training pushing to the point of a “blow up” is not such a bad thing as we strive to search for our limits and continue to move the needle.
Of course the gold standard is to dance on the edge, but we may only know where that edge is if we blow up from time to time!
