Why we race

Interesting isn’t it that people sign up to “race”! Be it a 5km running race, a CrossFit workout or a triathlon. They find an event that they somehow like the look of (dopamine) on a timeline that suits them and they hit “register” (loads of dopamine) and so the journey begins.
But why?
Most will say that without a race they can not focus – weakness.
Some will say they need the race to test their training – hmmmm.
No one will say they need to race to test the mind – truth.
Steve Prefontaine famously said “

“A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more.”

Racing is not about testing your legs or your lungs, you can easily and better do that in a controlled “training” environment, this is confirmed by the fact that they test athletes in labs not in races.
Racing is sick combination of being able to expose your physical preparation through insane mental strength.
Those that train well and race poorly do not need to train themselves better physically, they need to work on their mindset.
This is confirmed over and over when the best athletes (physically) do not win  on the biggest stages, it’s just like Pre said, it’s the ones that can at the end punish themselves even more.”
